What they build

Albedo designs, builds, and flies imaging satellites in Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO), roughly 275 to 450km up, about half the altitude of a normal Earth-observation satellite. Flying that low is the whole trick: get closer to the ground and the same optics resolve far finer detail. The target product is 10cm-per-pixel visible imagery plus 2m thermal infrared and a near-infrared band around 40cm. Ten centimeters is the number that matters. Planet's SkySat, Vantor (the former Maxar), and BlackSky sell roughly 30cm optical; 10cm was, until Albedo's NOAA license, a capability reserved for aircraft and classified government systems.

The hard part is not the camera, it is staying in VLEO at all. Down there, atmospheric drag and atomic-oxygen erosion are punishing, so the satellite needs constant propulsion, drag-tolerant design, and hardened materials to keep from decaying out of orbit or degrading. Albedo's bet is that if you can survive VLEO, you own a resolution tier nobody else can legally or physically reach. Thermal at 2m is a second wedge: it sees heat signatures day or night, useful for defense, energy, insurance, and infrastructure monitoring.

Team

VERIFIED Two of the three founders come straight out of Lockheed Martin's classified space work, which is the right pedigree for this problem. Topher Haddad (CEO) was a senior systems engineer at Lockheed on classified remote-sensing programs, with a mechanical-engineering degree from UT Austin and an electrical-engineering masters from Johns Hopkins. AyJay Lasater (CTO) was a system architect at Lockheed who took satellite constellations from concept through launch and on-orbit operations, trained at Colorado School of Mines. Winston Tri (Chief Product Officer) is a former Facebook (Meta) software engineer, the commercial and product counterweight to two hardware people. The company went through Y Combinator and is headquartered in Broomfield, Colorado.

The read: this is a credible, load-bearing founding team for a hard-tech imaging problem. The two technical founders have actually flown classified imaging systems, which is exactly the experience VLEO optical demands. The gap to watch is commercial: selling imagery at scale to enterprise and allied-government buyers is a different muscle than building the bird, and Tri is the only obvious commercial anchor at the top.

Funding and investors

VERIFIED The round history is public and clean. A $48M Series A in 2022, then a $35M Series A-1 in January 2024 led by Standard Investments, then a ~$100M Series B that closed 23 April 2025 led by General Innovation Capital at a reported $285M pre-money valuation. Named backers across the rounds include Standard Investments, Breakthrough Energy Ventures (the Bill Gates climate fund), Booz Allen Ventures, Shield Capital, Initialized Capital, Y Combinator, Giant Step Capital, Republic Capital, and the individual investor Bill Perkins.

RECONCILE Total-raised figures differ by source: Crunchbase showed roughly $97M before the Series B, while post-Series-B trade coverage puts the cumulative total in the $180M to $228M range. The honest read is at least ~$180M raised, last priced near a $285M pre-money. The presence of Breakthrough Energy, Booz Allen Ventures, and a defense-and-industrials investor base signals both climate/energy and national-security demand pull, which is the same dual-use pattern that makes GEOINT attractive right now.

Traction

VERIFIED The regulatory milestone is real and it is a moat: Albedo is the first commercial company NOAA has licensed to sell 10cm imagery. On the government side, the National Reconnaissance Office awarded Albedo a Stage I study contract (December 2023, one of five providers) and then a Stage II contract in August 2025 that lets the NRO task and buy imagery from Albedo's satellite. Albedo has also disclosed a US Air Force contract worth up to $12M and a partnership with European Space Imaging (EUSI) to distribute 10cm imagery in Europe.

VERIFIED The first satellite, Clarity-1, launched 14 March 2025 on SpaceX Transporter-13. Albedo's own post-mission writeup is unusually candid, and it cuts both ways. What worked: sustained VLEO operation for nine months, a drag coefficient 12% better than target, solar arrays that held power through atomic-oxygen exposure, and an end-to-end imaging chain that produced roughly 10cm visible detail plus thermal frames of ships in Tokyo Bay and individual coke ovens at steel plants. What failed: two of four control-moment gyroscopes lost bearings to an under-spec thermal limit, the third-party command radio developed memory faults, and contact was lost in December 2025. Albedo says the fixes are already in the next-generation design.

UNVERIFIED No public recurring-revenue figure. The contracts above are real but early, and the constellation is not yet operational, so treat this as pre-revenue-at-scale with strong government validation rather than proven commercial sales.

Market and competition

The commercial Earth-observation market is multi-billion and consolidating: Vantor (the rebranded Maxar), Planet, and BlackSky lead optical; ICEYE, Umbra, and Capella lead radar (SAR). Albedo does not compete on revisit rate or constellation size today. It competes on one axis nobody else holds: resolution. At 10cm it is roughly 3x sharper than the 30cm class the incumbents sell, and the NOAA license plus the physics of VLEO make that lead hard to copy quickly. Thermal at 2m adds a second differentiated layer.

The demand tailwind is exactly the one you have been writing about: defense and national-security budgets pulling hard on commercial GEOINT, and AI models that get more valuable as the underlying pixels get sharper. Finer imagery is better training and inference fuel for the analytics layer. The risk is symmetric: incumbents with flying constellations and cash could chase resolution down, and VLEO is expensive to sustain, so Albedo has to convert its head start into a live constellation and signed enterprise demand before the window narrows.

  1. Clarity-1 lost two CMGs and its radio before contact ended. What exactly changed in the next bird, and what is the target date for a fully operational VLEO satellite?
  2. What is the unit economics of one VLEO satellite over its life, including propulsion and replacement, and how many birds does breakeven need?
  3. Beyond NRO and the USAF, what commercial recurring revenue is booked or contracted today, and who are the anchor enterprise buyers?
  4. How durable is the 10cm NOAA advantage if Vantor, Planet, or a well-funded newcomer applies for the same license?
Verdict7.5 / 10. Albedo owns a real and defensible capability (first NOAA-licensed 10cm commercial imagery), a load-bearing ex-Lockheed team, brand-name backing, and government demand already on contract, all landing squarely on the Geospatial Intelligence thesis where AI and defense budgets are pulling hardest. It is not a 9: the first satellite validated the physics but did not survive a full mission, there is no proven commercial ARR, and VLEO capital intensity is severe. This is a high-conviction, high-capital GEOINT infrastructure bet where the next satellite is the whole story. Net-new to your portfolio, and worth a look.
